What is Autodrive and how will it improve road safety?

By StreetDrone,

October 10th, 2017

UK Autodrive is a collaborative project between Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors which is trialling automated vehicle technology as part of a government-backed competition.

The project will run for three years (until October 2018).

Autodrive’s trials will test both autonomous and connected vehicles in real-world urban environments, and show how they could solve everyday challenges such as congestion.

In terms of safety, the project is investigating several systems whose objective is to reduce accidents.

These include the use of collision warnings, which alert the driver through either sounds or visual alerts. Other systems being trialled include one that tells cars behind that the car in front is breaking with force, and one that alerts you to the presence of emergency vehicles such as ambulances.

These safety technologies will be tested on segregated sections of roads in Milton Keynes and Coventry, according to Wired.

The trial will also demonstrate the commercial operation of electric-powered self-driving “pods” at a city scale.
